Our year 6 transition project was the biggest ever this year with 14 mice (young people) in year 11, 12, 13 and university age, plus 6 volunteer adults. We recruit our M.O.U.S.E. team each year from local churches and youth groups. We were able to visit 54 schools in and around Milton Keynes over the two weeks, and we helped thousands of year 6 students with their move to secondary school. A huge success!
This year we used the Bible story of Daniel to help year 6 students think about the choices, challenges and changes they may face as they move to secondary school. We told them how Daniel had been forced to go to a new place where he had the choice either to be himself and stick to his beliefs and values, or to change in order to fit in, and we encouraged them to do the former with confidence when they move to high school.
We also gave out our annual free gift of an ‘It’s Your Move’ book to each child who watched the hour long M.O.U.S.E. presentation. The books each year are kindly sponsored by local churches or Bridgebuilder.
We had a great time over the two weeks and finished with a pizza lunch at Bridge House and games at Stockgrove Park for all those who had volunteered on the project.
Here’s what some of this year’s mice had to say:
“M.O.U.S.E. is a good experience both for the year 6 pupils and those giving the presentations. I have learnt so much about myself and I hope the year 6s have learnt a lot too.” – Denise Osei (from Action Chapel International)
“M.O.U.S.E. is all about doing a little good in a big world.” – Adam Downton (from Newport Pagnell Baptist Church)
“I’m doing M.O.U.S.E. for the second year because it is a fun experience, good use of time and it is great to build confidence and transferable skills like public speaking. It’s nice to meet other Christian young people from different cultures and backgrounds.” – Verishua Maddix (from Church Of God of Prophecy)
“Mouse is a great project, it is enjoyable to give something back by volunteering on the team. Most year 6s are not very confident about moving to secondary school so it is rewarding to reassure them that everything will be okay. Bridgebuilder has given me new friends through HopeMK and M.O.U.S.E. and Bridgebuilder has helped me to be confident about my faith in God and to share this with my friends.” – Gabbie Lyimo (from Jesus Celebration Centre)
